The dissertation explores the philosophical conditions in which the
educational ideal of critical thinking can be considered as crucial for
democratic citizenship. It analyzes the conceptions of rationality and
human morality in the philosophical theories of critical thinking and
brings these views into dialogue with recent empirical research results
concerning the nature and development of human rationality and morality. It
draws conceptual tools from, among other sources, the framework of
philosophical pragmatism and contemporary discussion on ideal and non-ideal
theories.

This position requires a strong background in philosophy or educational
theory; ability to conduct independent scholarly research in English; and
ability to be a collaborative and contributing member of an ambitious
research group. Background in analytic or pragmatist philosophy are
considered as benefits. The appointee must hold a suitable master’s degree.

This dissertation tackles questions arising from the new forms of citizen
participation in the era of digitalization and social media. A hypothesis
to be explored is that in the tradition of philosophical pragmatism, the
conceptualization of democracy, especially the accounts of participatory
politics offered by John Dewey and his followers, can address these timely
issues. Rather than relying on theoretical assumptions concerning reasons
and rationality assumed to be somehow shared by all citizens, the
pragmatist approach recognizes the need for building capacities of
participation by educational means. Likewise, the pragmatist approach
acknowledges the imperativeness of subjecting any account of such
capacities to public debate and revision. The merits of this approach will be
investigated from the perspective of citizenship education and citizen
participation in a digital era.
